Thoughts On Memorial Day by Myra Charleston Memorial
Day was originally set as May 30 of each year.
In 1971 the US Congress passed the National Holiday Act of 1971 (P. L.
90-363) to establish a three-day weekend. Since
then our “Day of Remembrance” has deteriorated to the point that most people
don’t even think about why it was originally established.
For most people, Memorial Day now
signifies the beginning of summer fun. Barbeques
are fired up, trips to the beach are planned and fans tune in to the
Indianapolis 500. There is nothing
wrong with three day weekends or ‘fun in the sun’ but we need to remember
that the Memorial Day was not created to kick off summer.
It was originally set as a day of mourning and a time to honor the memory
of Americans killed in action. We
need to restore this day of honor. On January 4, 2007 Senator Inouye (HI)
introduced a bill to reinstate May 30th as Memorial Day.
Sadly as of this date (May 22, 2008), there have been no co-sponsors.
Armed Forces Day is held the third
weekend of every May. It could
easily become a three-day holiday – and what a wonderful holiday it could be
– a three days to show our active duty personnel our appreciation as
well as a time to celebrate the freedoms they have won and preserved for us. Please visit http://www.usmemorialday.org/act.html
for more information on this. Please
join me in encouraging your congressmen to co-sponsor this bill and restore
status to Memorial Day. |
