Healing Hearts Through Emu Egg Shells

Like many Americans, Marg McCarthy watched with horror on September 11, 2001 as the reports rolled in:  American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 crashed into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center.  American Airlines Flight 77 hit the Pentagon and United Airlines Flight 93, possibly headed for Camp David, crashed into the Pennsylvania countryside, prevented from reaching their target by courageous passengers who rushed the hijackers.

"I saw a TV report about the Port Authority Officer that had lost his dog, Sirius, an explosives detection dog, at the World Trade Center," said Marg McCarthy.  "It just broke my heart because he seemed almost apologetic about his grief about losing his K-9 partner in light of all the human loss that had just happened."  Watching the report, Marg cried along with the rest of us..  "I felt like I wanted..... NEEDED... to do *something*.  It came to me that there was something.... at least one little thing I could do for someone there."  Marg set out on a mission to locate this young Port Authority Officer but hit dead end after dead end until she got help from the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary.  Marg was directed to a website about David Lim and his K-9 Officer partner, Sirius.  "I wrote him and asked if I could paint a portrait of his 'Sirius'," said Marg.  "Fearing that I sounded like a total loon....which I have sounded like before....I explained that my own selfish motive was to be able to do something for someone there.  We have no money but I can paint animal portraits.  The email I received back from him included a number of pictures of himself and Siruis.  One of them was them with former President Clinton along with several others.  The one that truly struck me was one of them at the top of the World Trade Center."

Marg painted a face portrait of Sirius from one of the photos on an emu shell.  On the base there is a brass plaque with "Sirius" K9 Badge #17, WTC Sept. 11, 2001.  On the underside of the wooden base, Marge had a poem engraved.  It turned out to be a most appreciated memorial for his K-9 Partner.

Sirius has two memorials that we know of:
