Walking for Breast Cancer
Avon Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk

With 10 events down and 3 still to go in 2002, the Avon Breast Cancer 3-Day Walks have already netted an estimated $49.2 million.  Funds raised during the three-day walks will go into five vital areas of the breast cancer cause: biomedical research, clinical care, financial assistance and support services, educational seminars and advocacy training, and early detection and awareness programs nationwide.  The goal of the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade is to benefit all women, with a special emphasis on reaching the medically underserved, including low-income, elderly, and minority women, and those with inadequate health insurance.

Lorna & Jenean This year Jenean Witherspoon is walking.  She is not an athlete.  She is not a movie star or singer.  She is a 30-year-old mother of 4, struggling to make ends, meet just like many others.  She is not dwelling on her problems, though.  Jenean is joining 3,000 other walkers in a seventy-two hour, 60-mile commitment that former walkers have referred to as the greatest experience of their lives.

Jenean will be participating in the “flagship” walk.  The Los Angeles walk is from Santa Barbara to Malibu, California and takes place from October 18th-20th, 2002.  This is the original walk, started in 1993 and it has in the past netted over $21 million for the breast cancer crusade.

Why did Jenean decide to walk?  “I began this walk to support my friend, Lorna, who is also walking.  But, since then it has become a personal challenge for me.  I've never done anything like this before!  Because my schedule is very busy, I have to make the most of every opportunity to find time to train.  My friends, who've seen me walking to church during the week, are amazed when I tell them that I'm coming from my house, which is about 5.5 miles away.  Right now I can walk about 12 miles at a stretch, but my goal is to do 20 miles comfortably.”

One of the requirements in order to participate in the event is that you must commit to raising $1,900.00.  With the help of friends, Jenean has raised a little over $400.00 so far.  One of her on-line groups, Heart of the Renaissance, is having a “Virtual Bake Sale” to raise money for the cause.  In exchange for a donation (minimum $5), a virtual “sweet” is placed on the page linking back to the donators website until Oct. 3, 2003.  Other funds have been raised through candy sales and individual donations.
