Draco the Dragon

3rd Place Experienced Emu Egg Carving

The Eggshell Sculptor Eggshell Carving Contest 2002

This Dragon is based on purchased designs from Lora S. Irishs' drawings. The dragon is called "Draco", the dragon that fills the night sky.   Mythology of Babylon states that the king of the gods slayed this dragon and then used his body to fashion the heavens. Draco can be seen as a constellation in Ursa Minor.

Artist Tina Munford has utilized all three layers of color inherent in the emu egg in order to create her Dragon Emu Egg.  At first glance you might think the sinuous effect is gained by using only the dark outer layer and the teal inner layer, but look again.  She has subtly scored the body and tail of the dragon to the white of the egg, giving additional depth.  The dragon is centered in an oval which has been cut to the white of the egg.  The oval is 'framed' by green fire.
