Radiant Cross

From Pysanky Showcase comes The Radiant Cross Pysanky Chicken Egg.  

This is a very important design for the Easter Holiday. The cross with its rays of light are symbolic of Christ and the Resurrection. The cross is in a black oval representing the sun. The sun is the most ancient of all pysanky symbols and is symbolic of life itself. The star around the sun echoes the symbol of life. 

The meandering double lines around this pysanka signify eternity with no beginning or end. To ancient Ukrainians the double line also represented a trap for evil. The evil spirits would get caught in the lines and be trapped. 

For this pysanka the artist also used the symbols of ladders signifying prayer and prosperity and pine needles signifying health and eternal youth.

Black - eternity
Yellow - light and happiness
Orange - endurance and strength
White - purity
Red - positive color symbolizing the divine love and passion of Christ
