Displaying pysanky or Ukrainian eggs in a shallow basket or bowl makes not only a lovely display, it is a wonderful conversation piece.  Each symbol and color has significant meaning in pysanky art.  When the Ukraine was under  U. S. S. R. rule, pysanky, with its specifically Christian symbolism, was  discouraged.

Traditionally, gifts of pysanky eggs are given to family and respected friends or associates.

The eggs pictured here are chicken eggs, but pysanky eggs are now being done of ratite eggs (emu, ostrich, rhea) as well.   Pysanky is ever evolving and more modern designs are included in the art form, along with many original designs.

Special thanks to pysanky artist Brenda Craig for these pictures.  Special note:  Brenda is running a special on her pysanky eggs through April, email her for more information!

For more information on the art and history of pysanky, check the articles in this issue by Patty Winsuk-deAngelo.
