Contacts Help Ease Cornea Disease

by Dr. Tom Smith

"Keratoconus" is a thinning of the cornea or the front surface of the eye.   A thinner cornea cannot maintain its normal shape, but rather appears in the shape of a cone.  This irregularity causes distorted vision.

About one in two thousand people have keratoconus, which often starts in the early twenties and then deteriorates gradually.  In most cases, both eyes become affected.  Sometimes the condition is hereditary, but often the cause is unknown.

The use of gas-permeable contact lenses if often the first method of managing keratoconus.  These lenses, which are available in numerous designs, provide the eye with a new regular surface and neutralize corneal distortions.  A vision-wear specialist needs to craft the lenses to fit the cornea's very steep and irregular shape.  If the cornea becomes too damaged, however, a corneal transplant may be necessary.
